TOKYO – Toshihiro Nikai, retained as secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party, is an intraparty powerbroker who supports the idea of giving Prime Minister Shinzo Abe another term as LDP president beyond 2021.

In the LDP’s No. 2 post since August 2016, Nikai is already the longest-serving secretary general. The 80-year-old heavyweight has earned trust from Abe for his ability to unite the ruling party.

A native of Wakayama Prefecture in western Japan, Nikai is also known for his close ties with China and South Korea. He has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping five times so far.

Despite his proven political style, frustrations have grown within some LDP members since he apparently seeks to expand the strength of his intraparty faction by bringing in independent and former opposition lawmakers.
