PROFILE: Regional promotion minister Kitamura active on security issues

TOKYO – Seigo Kitamura, appointed as regional revitalization minister, is known for his active work on security issues including his stint as a senior vice defense minister.


Raised in the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan, the seven-term House of Representatives member from the prefecture has also made efforts to promote local economies including remote islands.


The 72-year-old is a leading member of a special lower house committee on North Korea’s abductions of Japanese nationals in the 1970s and 1980s.


A Waseda University graduate, Kitamura became a Christian when he got married and has a statue of the Virgin Mary in his room at the Diet.
