TOKYO – Kazunori Tanaka, minister in charge of reconstructing northeastern areas affected by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, has worked as a volunteer probation officer since the 1980s.

While serving as a lawmaker, the 70-year-old, who won his first seat in the lower house in 1996, has helped people on parole to be rehabilitated.

The eight-term House of Representatives member, becoming a Cabinet member for the first time, previously assumed posts including senior vice environment minister and senior vice finance minister.

He entered national politics after serving as a Kanagawa prefectural assembly member.

Tanaka, born to the family of a farmer in Yamaguchi Prefecture, graduated from the law department of Hosei University in Tokyo.
