NHK reported on the disclosure by Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga this morning that the GOJ has filed a protest with the North Korean government concerning a boat in possession of weapons spotted by a Japanese patrol boat last month in Japan’s exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan. The government spokesman explained that the GOJ has concluded that the boat was from North Korea on the basis of various intelligence. The broadcaster added that North Korean fishing boats have been frequently operating in the area in violation of Japanese regulations.

Mainichi and Nikkei published similar stories online, explaining that three crew members clad in camouflage fatigues on what appeared to be the DPRK boat in question pointed rifles at a Japan Coast Guard vessel.
