Tokyo, Sept. 13 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s Defense Minister Taro Kono said Friday that he wants to discuss measures against terrorist attacks and cyberattacks against nuclear power plants with nuclear emergency preparedness minister Shinjiro Koizumi and industry minister Isshu Sugawara.

Kono is apparently trying to enhance his presence by cooperating with rising star Koizumi, who also serves as environment minister.

“As defense minister, I must comprehend to what extent nuclear reactor buildings, spent fuel storage pools and nuclear fuel recycling facilities are safe against attacks,” Kono said at a press conference.

“After collecting the information, I would like to exchange opinions” with the environment minister, who has jurisdiction over the Nuclear Regulation Authority, and the industry minister.

Kono, Koizumi and Sugawara all took up their current posts in a cabinet reshuffle carried out by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday.
