Sunday’s Ryukyu Shimpo wrote that Mayor Kuwae of the city of Okinawa sent to relevant entities of the U.S. and Japanese governments on Sept. 19 a letter protesting the recent cases of driving under the influence of alcohol involving U.S. Marines. The paper noted that two Marines were arrested separately in the city on Sept. 14 and 15  on suspicion of DUI. In the letter, the mayor expressed strong displeasure over the incidents and called on the Third Marine Expeditionary Force to tighten discipline. The municipality sent the letter to the Third Marine Expeditionary Force, the U.S. Consulate in Naha, and the Okinawa bureaus of the Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry.
