The following is the gist of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s press conference held in New York on Sept. 25 (Sept. 26, Japan time).

Japan-U.S. trade agreement

[The agreement] was a win-win outcome for both Japan and the U.S. It carries great significance as it will not only help the Japanese economy grow further but also will contribute to the development of the global economy based on free and fair rules. I made sure that the joint statement does not make Japanese cars and auto parts subject to additional tariffs and President Trump understood this point.

Middle East

Japan, as a longtime ally of the U.S., is asked to play a unique role as it has also maintained friendship ties with Iran for many years.  We will tenaciously work to continue dialogue and do our best to defuse regional tensions and achieve peace and stability.

Constitutional revision

I hope that the opposition parties will bring their ideas to the Commissions on the Constitution [of both houses of the Diet] and the ruling and opposition camps will engage in discussions beyond their political differences to meet public expectations.

Consumption tax hike

We will keep a close eye on economic developments and will take full and flexible steps if risks emerge.

Lower House dissolution

The idea has not crossed my mind. Not at all. I will commit myself to focusing on producing results in domestic and foreign policies and fulfilling my responsibility for the sake of people.

Japan-ROK relationship

South Korea has left unaddressed its violations of the 1965 agreement concerning the settlement of claims related to war, and that action is undermining the relationship of trust between the two nations. It is truly regrettable that South Korea unilaterally announced its termination of the General Security of Military Information Agreement with Japan (GSOMIA). To begin with, I want to call on South Korea to keep promises made at the national level.
