Sunday’s Ryukyu Shimpo wrote that a DOD official reportedly told the paper on Saturday that the department has no plan at this stage to deploy land-based intermediate-range missiles or nuclear missiles in Okinawa. The paper wrote that Defense Minister Kono and Foreign Minister Motegi dismissed at separate news conferences on Friday the paper’s earlier report on the alleged U.S. plans to deploy new intermediate-range missiles in Okinawa and mainland Japan by saying that there is no such plan. The paper quoted a senior Defense Ministry official as saying that this might be disinformation spread by Russia and that the paper seems to be accepting information about the United States from a Russian source without questioning it.
