Russian defense minister planning to visit DPRK, China

NHK reported online that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu is planning to visit North Korea as early as late October for talks with People’s Armed Forces Minister No Kwang Chol. The network speculated that the planned visit is intended to demonstrate Russia’s presence on the Korean Peninsula by stepping up its cooperation with the DPRK on the military front as well as in the political and economic arenas. Shoigu is also planning to visit China in conjunction with his trip to North Korea to further promote Moscow’s cooperation with Beijing amid its deepening conflict with the United States.
