NHK reported online that a ceremony was held in Yokosuka on Thursday to welcome the Chinese missile destroyer 052D, which arrived in Yokosuka today to participate in an MSDF-sponsored fleet review to be held in Sagami Bay off Kanagawa Prefecture on Oct. 14 with the participation of some of Japan’s naval partners. The network said this is the first time in ten years for a Chinese naval vessel to visit Japan and the first time for one to take part in a Japanese ship review. The network speculated that the Chinese vessel’s participation in the event is aimed at supporting the improvement in ties between the two nations and giving momentum to President Xi’s planned visit to Japan next spring. Chinese Ambassador to Japan Kong Xuanyou stated at the ceremony that the ship will participate in the fleet review as a messenger of peace and friendship and this demonstrates China’s sincere hope to promote forward-looking relations with Japan.
