Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo reported on a press conference by Governor Tamaki on Thursday at which he reportedly acknowledged the Ginowan municipal assembly’s recent adoption of an opinion paper calling for the promotion of the Henoko project and indicated that he will take the views of Ginowan residents seriously. However, he also reiterated his opposition to the FRF construction at Henoko. On his planned trip to the U.S. starting next Monday, he noted that he will provide a detailed explanation of the situation facing Okinawa with regard to the relocation of the Futenma base to Henoko with a particular focus on the soft seabed and the construction period; the operation of the FRF; and the outcome of February’s prefectural referendum in which over 70% of those who voted opposed the Futenma relocation.
