550,000 criminals to be pardoned on occasion of imperial succession

Asahi and Yomiuri wrote that the GOJ told an LDP General Council meeting on Tuesday that 550,000 people will be granted pardons on the occasion of Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement ceremony on Oct. 22. The GOJ plans to approve the plan at a cabinet meeting on Friday. The papers noted that the GOJ granted pardons twice during the transition from the Showa Era to the Heisei Era. The first instance was the pardoning of 10 million people on the occasion of the Emperor Showa’s funeral in 1989 and the second time was the pardoning of 2.5 million people on the enthronement of Emperor Akihito in 1990.
