Yomiuri and Mainichi wrote that the GOJ submitted legislation to the Diet on Tuesday to approve the new trade agreements with the United States on goods and digital trade with the goal of effectuating it during the current Diet session.

Nikkei asserted that attention will be focused on the U.S. tariffs on Japanese auto imports in future Diet discussions on the bill because the opposition bloc is insisting that Washington did not make a clear commitment to eliminate the tariffs in the statement on the agreement, which read in part: “Customs duties on automobile and auto parts will be subject to further negotiations with respect to the elimination of customs duties.” Foreign Minister Motegi told reporters on Tuesday that this language can be interpreted to mean there is the assumption the tariffs will be eliminated.
