Nations meet in Paris on disposal of nuclear waste

Mainichi wrote that Japan-led talks to discuss the final disposal of spent fuel from nuclear power plants were held at the OECD headquarters in Paris on Monday. The paper wrote that 14 nations participated in the discussions and that representatives of the Nuclear Energy Agency of the OECD and the IAEA also took part in the meeting.

Asahi called the meeting the first session of an international conference aimed at sharing information on the management of spent fuel from nuclear power reactors. The paper wrote that the meeting was attended by nations that possess spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste, including the United States, France, and China. According to the paper, Finland, which leads in nuclear waste management, made a presentation on its measures that include constructing nuclear waste disposal facilities. The participants reportedly agreed to share information and hold another meeting next spring.
