NHK, TBS, and Fuji TV reported that Prime Minister Abe sent a “masakaki” tree offering to Yasukuni Shrine on Thursday to celebrate the start of its annual autumn festival through Sunday, noting that he does not plan to visit the shrine during the four-day event. The broadcaster added that Minister of State for Okinawa Affairs Eto visited the Shinto memorial this morning, explaining that this was the first time in two and half years for an incumbent cabinet minister to pay homage at the shrine associated with the Second World War.
