The number of young Japanese people who pursue studies overseas is decreasing amid the ongoing globalization of the research and development field. Data compiled by the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, showed that the number of Japanese studying science and engineering at graduate schools in the U.S. was only 990 in 2017. This represents a sharp drop from a decade ago in 2007 when the number exceeded 2,500. (Abridged)
