The Saturday morning editions of all national papers wrote that on Friday the Fisheries Agency released a video of the collision between one of its patrol boats and a North Korean trawler in the Sea of Japan on Oct. 7. The video shows the Japanese crew using a water cannon to drive the DPRK vessel out of Japan’s EEZ and trying to rescue North Korean crewmembers when their ship sank after the collision. The agency reportedly explained that the video was made public in order to counter the DPRK narrative that Japan should pay compensation because the Japanese ship sank its fishing boat “intentionally.” The dailies pointed out that the footage does not prove that the DPRK was engaged in illegal fishing as claimed by the agency.
