Gov’t provides 7.9 billion yen in subsidies to political parties

On Oct. 18, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications disbursed a total of 7.93426 billion yen in the third tranche of 2019 government subsidies to eight political parties (total subsidies in 2019: 31.48483 billion yen). NHK Kara Kokumin Wo Mamoru To (The Party to Protect the People from NHK) and Reiwa Shinsengumi, which newly earned status as political parties in the Upper House election in July, received their first-ever disbursements at 34.91 million yen and 33.56 million yen, respectively. The Liberal Democratic Party received the largest amount of funds of any party at 4.35013 billion yen, which accounts for roughly half of its total subsidy for 2019. The Japanese Communist Party did not apply for a subsidy.
