Fuji TV reported that during a live appearance on a morning news show, Tokyo Governor Koike reiterated her strong objection to the IOC’s plan to hold the marathon event for the 2020 Olympics in Sapporo instead of Tokyo to avoid the summer heat in the nation’s capital. “The Sapporo option is inconceivable to me. The event will be held in Tokyo without fail,” said the governor, adding that various measures can and will be taken to protect athletes from the heat, such as moving the starting time from 6 a.m. to 5 a.m. or even earlier. Koike will reportedly meet with a senior IOC official to discuss the matter in the late afternoon.
