The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced on Oct. 25 that the government will allocate base subsidies and adjustment subsidies to a total of 298 municipalities in 45 prefectures as well as to Tokyo’s special wards that host U.S. forces bases and Self-Defense Forces facilities. The two subsidies total 36.54 billion yen, which will be given to the municipalities within the year. Municipalities in Okinawa Prefecture will receive about 7.273 billion yen in total.
Of the 36.54 billion yen, base subsidies total 29.14 billion yen and adjustment subsidies 7.4 billion yen. Iwakuni City will receive 2.5 billion yen, the most of any municipality, since the city now hosts more facilities due to the realignment of U.S. forces. Yokosuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture will receive 2.2 billion yen and Misawa City in Aomori Prefecture 2.1 billion yen.
