On Oct. 30, a joint meeting of the divisions of national defense and foreign affairs of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) approved a plan to extend the dispatch of Self-Defense Forces (SDF) members to the command center of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) on the Sinai Peninsula by one year. The MFO is overseeing the implementation of the ceasefire between Egypt and Israel on the peninsula in eastern Egypt. The government will soon approve the plan at a cabinet meeting. LDP’s junior coalition partner, Komeito, also gave the green light to the plan at a meeting on the same day.

Two SDF members were sent to the MFO command center in the southern part of the peninsula in April to liaise and coordinate with the Israeli and Egyptian governments. The SDF officers were initially scheduled to stay there until Nov. 30 this year.
