Sunday’s Okinawa Times gave top play to an investigative report compiled by the U.S. military that the U.S. Marines at Iwakuni failed to disclose that a midair collision occurred between an FA-18 fighter and a KC-130 tanker off Kadena Air Base on April 28, 2016 and that the Marines did not conduct a formal probe. According to the paper, the document also mentioned numerous cases of misconduct by Iwakuni-based squadron pilots that could have led to serious incidents, including hands-free piloting and drug abuse. Okinawa Vice Governor Jahana reportedly told the paper that it makes no sense that the Japanese side was not informed of the collision. The paper reported on Monday that Governor Tamaki told reporters on Sunday that such misconduct is appalling. Monday’s Ryukyu Shimpo also reported on the comment by the governor.
