All broadcasters reported on the opening of Defense and Security Equipment International (DSEI) in Chiba on Monday, saying that some 150 arms manufacturers, including 50 Japanese firms, set up booths. With the backing of the Japanese and British governments, the DSEI is being held for the first time outside Britain in order to boost Japanese manufacturers’ international competitiveness in the defense sector. The networks explained that the GOJ is anxious to help local defense contractors identify business opportunities abroad following the easing of the weapons export ban five years ago. TV Asahi said the GOJ is especially anxious to assist small domestic weapons parts suppliers in finding potential foreign customers and partners, as Japan has effectively been “forced” to import finished defense equipment from the United States. NHK added that some 400 people gathered outside the venue to protest what they called a “bazaar for lethal weapons.”
