Nikkei published a prominent inside-page article on the first-ever 2+2 foreign and defense ministerial meeting between Japan and India in New Delhi slated for later this month, saying that India is the 7th partner with whom Japan will holds such high-level talks. The participants are expected to exchange views on cooperation under the free and open Indo-Pacific initiative. They will also discuss the proposed signing of a bilateral acquisition and cross-servicing accord, the situation in North Korea, and China’s maritime advancement. The daily noted that Tokyo regards New Delhi as a “quasi-ally” in countering Beijing, adding that the 2+2 framework is becoming increasingly important for Japan since enhancing security cooperation with foreign partners is critical to addressing regional and global problems.
