NHK reported that Hokkaido Governor Suzuki said the prefecture would not make a bid to host an integrated resort (IR) with casino at a plenary session of the Hokkaido assembly this morning. Hokkaido was the first of the eight prefectures and municipalities who expressed willingness to host an IR with casino to withdraw from the bidding. The governor said he made the decision based on the judgement it would be impossible for the Hokkaido government to take sufficient measures to mitigate the environmental impact of an IR project before the July 2021 deadline for submitting a formal application.
