Construction of the “Grand Egyptian Museum” is underway in Giza outside Cairo with the support of the Japanese government. The museum, which will open in 2020, is expected to draw more tourists to Egypt.

The total project costs about 140 billion yen, of which Japan will lend 84.2 billion yen.

With the improvement of security in Egypt, Japanese tourists are returning to that nation. According to the Embassy of Japan in Egypt, some 42,000 Japanese visited the country in 2018, the highest number since the 2011 political uprising. (Abridged)
