U.S. leaders offer condolences on passing of former Prime Minister Nakasone

All national dailies except Asahi reported on a White House statement concerning the passing of former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone in which President Trump quoted President Reagan as saying Nakasone was “a friend, a wise colleague, and the leader of America’s most important partner and ally in the Pacific.” President Trump stressed the former Japanese leader’s “efforts to strengthen the United States-Japan alliance and his commitment to expanding democratic governance in Asia laid the foundation for the global partnership between the two nations, which is a cornerstone of peace, prosperity, and freedom in the Indo-Pacific region and across the world.”

Secretary Pompeo released a similar statement, calling the ex-premier “a courageous leader at a critical juncture for Japan and a trusted friend of the United States, who personified the strength of the U.S.-Japan alliance and economic relationship…. I, and the people of the United States, will long remember Prime Minister Nakasone’s warm friendship and immeasurable contribution to U.S.-Japan relations, as well as his inspiring dedication to his country and the region.”
