Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso boarded the Uzushio submarine of the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) and took a one-day underwater cruise on it this May, the Tokyo Shimbun has learned.

The experiential ride was conducted on a Saturday, which was a holiday for the MSDF’s unit responsible for the submarine, at the request of Aso’s side. No prime ministers and cabinet ministers, including defense ministers, have boarded a submarine just for the experience at least for the past five years.

According to the Ministry of Defense, Aso boarded the Uzushio, which belongs to the MSDF’s second submarine flotilla stationed in the U.S. Navy’s Yokosuka base in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, on the morning of May 18. The Uzushio left the base and submerged in Sagami Bay before returning to the base on the evening that day.  (Abridged)
