Tokyo, Dec. 6 (Jiji Press)–Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono on Friday indicated that Iran understands Tokyo’s possible dispatch of Self-Defense Forces troops to the Middle East to ensure safe navigation of ships.

“There has been no negative response” from Iran over the matter, Kono told a press conference.

Japan has been providing information on the plan to Iran with transparency and communicating with the Middle Eastern country, including through telephone talks with a relevant minister there, Kono said.

He did not disclose details of the phone talks, including what was discussed and when they took place.

While considering the SDF dispatch, Japan has also been stepping up diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is expected to visit Japan late this month for talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, sources familiar with the matter said.
