South Korea calls Japan’s rising sun flag a “flag of hatred”

Yomiuri wrote from Seoul that in Twitter and Facebook messages posted last week, the South Korean government called Japan’s Rising Sun Flag a “flag of hatred” and insisted it should not be used in the Olympics. The paper speculated the messages were intended to increase the public’s opposition to the Japanese flag, which some regard as a symbol of Japan’s wartime aggression. The Japanese government has been rejecting South Korea’s assertion by saying the design of the flag has nothing to do with militarism and symbolizes the sun as does the Japanese national flag. In September, the South Korean government sent to the International Olympic Committee a letter calling for a ban on the use of flag at the Olympics.
