The Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren, will soon suggest the government step up space development as it believes “satellite data holds a major key” in the digitalized society.

The space business is attracting investment from around the world and such investment is expected to increase. Keidanren feels a sense of urgency over Japan’s inadequate measures for utilizing data. So the business lobby will work on the government to include its proposal in the basic space policy to be revised next year.

In the proposal, Keidanren points out that the space business market was worth 45 trillion yen in 2018, an increase of more than 20% since 2015. It referred to the private sector as “another main user of space development” because investment in startups reached some 350 billion yen in 2018. (Abridged)
