Nikkei wrote that the government and universities in Japan are expected to step up their efforts to prevent the leakage of advanced technology by international students, saying that government ministries are studying how the Trump administration limits access to key technology and data by students and researchers from abroad. The article said Japanese colleges are apparently vulnerable to potential dual-use technology theft by international students, who have been increasing in number over the past ten years. As the United States is growing increasingly concerned about industrial and economic espionage involving Chinese students and scholars, the article projected that Japanese universities which conduct joint research with American institutions may be required to implement more vigorous data management as a precautionary measure against technology theft.
