Mainichi and Asahi reported that Senior Vice Defense Minister Yamamoto met with the mayor of Nishinoomote, Kagoshima Prefecture, this morning and explained the GOJ’s plan to purchase a local island for the transfer of the U.S. military’s field carrier landing practice (FCLP) from Iwo Island. The MOD official reportedly said Mageshima will be used as an FCLP site twice a year for about 10 days each time and the outcrop may also be used as a training area for the SDF. According to Yamamoto, some 100 SDF personnel may work on the island but would not live there. There are reportedly no plans for U.S. personnel to be stationed on the island on a regular basis.
