GOJ updates roadmap for decommissioning Fukushima reactors

Nikkei reported online that the GOJ has updated the roadmap for decommissioning the four reactors at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. This is the fifth update of the roadmap initially adopted in November 2011. The previous plan had stipulated that nuclear fuel removal would start at one of the three damaged reactors in 2021. While specifying that remotely controlled robots will be used to remove the nuclear debris from Reactor No. 2 starting in 2021, the new roadmap fails to indicate when this work will be completed and when it will commence at the two remaining reactors. However, the latest plan still calls for finishing the entire decommissioning operation between 2041 and 2051.
