Sunday’s Sankei led with the disclosure by several GOJ sources that the Defense Ministry is considering modifying an existing missile to counter the various ballistic missiles that North Korea is currently developing, including one similar to Russia’s Iskander short-range missile that can alter its flight path over its entire trajectory.  The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s Type 03 surface-to-air missile will reportedly be converted into an interceptor that can shoot down ballistic missiles with abnormal trajectories. As Russia and China are rapidly moving forward with the development of “hypersonic missile systems,” the daily said the ministry is also aiming to develop a more advanced interception system in the 2020s.
