NEC plans to enter the field of quantum computing, which is expected to power the next generation of super high-speed computers. The company will develop software indispensable to quantum computing applications in partnership with D-Wave Systems, a Canadian startup, and will launch commercial services using quantum computing simulation.

At a press briefing announcing its entry into the field of quantum computing on Dec. 20, the firm also revealed plans to establish a “quantum computing promotion office” in January 2020 as well as to roll out a paid consulting service on applications for quantum computing in June 2020. The new office will be staffed by 20 people, who will work with clients to examine how quantum computing can solve business challenges in such fields as finance, pharmaceuticals, and distribution.
