The partial return of land on Camp Zukeran (located in Chatan Town and other municipalities), which Japan and the U.S. have agreed on, will take place on March 31, the Mainichi learned from the prefectural and municipal governments on Jan. 7. According to the town education council, the remains of the “Chatan Gusuku,” the residence of a local warlord, are located within the area to be returned. The municipal office plans to designate the location as a national historical relic site.
The land to be returned covers a portion of a warehouse area in Chatan located on the northwestern side of Camp Zukeran and a district along Shirahi River, totaling about 11 hectares. Most of the land, including the site where the remains are located, is privately owned.
