[The following is the gist of the meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Jan. 12, 2020:]
[Middle East situation]
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe: An armed conflict in the Middle East including Iran would greatly affect the peace and stability in not only the region but also elsewhere in the world. Any further escalation in the situation must absolutely be avoided. I’d like to ask all countries concerned to respond to the situation in a restrained manner.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman: I completely agree. Tensions in the Middle East region will negatively affect the entire world, so dialogue between countries concerned is crucial. Saudi Arabia will further enhance its own efforts.
[Dispatch of SDF]
Abe: The Self-Defense Forces (SDF) will gather information to ensure the safety of navigation of vessels related to Japan.
Prince Mohammed: I fully support Japan’s efforts.
Abe, Prince Mohammed: Confirmed that they will promote bilateral cooperation. Agreed to closely work together toward the success of this year’s meeting of the Group of 20 major economies, which will be chaired by Saudi Arabia.
Abe: I appreciate Saudi Arabia’s stable supply of oil to Japan.
Prince Mohammed: We’ll continue to give you full consideration.
