[The following is the gist of the meeting between Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha held in East Palo Alto, near San Francisco, on Jan. 14, 2020 (Jan. 15, Japan time)].
Foreign Minister Motegi and South Korean Foreign Minister Kang said that Japan and South Korea fully support the U.S. efforts to denuclearize the DPRK through bilateral dialogue with the North.
The three ministers noted that it is important for the DPRK to proactively engage in dialogue with the U.S. toward complete denuclearization rather than taking provocative actions.
Sanctions on DPRK
The three ministers noted that it is still too early to relax the sanctions on the North.
Foreign Minister Motegi called for support and cooperation for the early resolution of the abduction issue involving Japanese nationals.
The three ministers acknowledged the current situation and confirmed their trilateral cooperation.
