The Okinawa prefectural election board on Jan. 17 decided to kick off official campaigning for prefectural assembly elections (48 seats) on May 29 and conduct voting on June 7 due to the expiration of incumbents’ present term of office. Attention will be focused on whether the ruling bloc of the prefectural government, which supports Governor Denny Tamaki, who opposes the relocation of the Futenma air station (Ginowan City) to the Henoko district in Nago, can maintain a majority.
