In a BS-TBS program on Jan. 22, former Liberal Democratic Party Secretary-General Makoto Koga, who is honorary chairman of the Kishida faction (Kochikai), expressed his intent to back Fumio Kishida, who is chairperson of the LDP Policy Research Council and chairman of the Kishida faction, as a candidate to succeed Abe. Since last spring, Koga repeatedly said he would back Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, so he has apparently changed his mind. Koga emphasized his intent to support Kishida, saying, “If he will simply indicate why he aims to be prime minister, I would like to see it happen. I will become one of his supporters.”
