During a press conference on Jan. 21, Secretary-General for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the House of Councillors Hiroshige Seko answered a question about the intention of Prime Minister Abe (LDP president) to amend the Constitution during his premiership, saying, “We are absolutely not planning to determine the schedule based on the prime minister’s term of office.” Abe’s current term expires in September 2021. Seko also reiterated that the most important course of action is to debate the issue in both chambers of the Diet.
