The Sunday editions of Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo led with reports on a U.S. Navy MH-60S helicopter’s unscheduled landing in waters off the east coast of Okinawa on Saturday afternoon. Ryukyu Shimpo called the incident a “crash” and claimed that this was the 51st “crash” involving the U.S. military that has occurred in Okinawa since its reversion to Japan in 1972. Meanwhile, Okinawa Times wrote on Monday that the Defense Ministry’s Okinawa Bureau said immediately after the incident that the aircraft made an “unscheduled water landing” and the Defense Ministry announced later that the helicopter made a “water landing.” The paper wrote that the 7th Fleet said in a press release on Jan. 25 that the MH-60S helicopter “went down,” but the Japanese translation referred to the incident as a “water landing,” the same wording used by the Defense Ministry.
