All networks reported that Health Minister Kato told the press this morning that the MHLW is considering testing all passengers and crew members of the Diamond Princess for the new coronavirus before they disembark. Minister Kato reportedly said: “We are looking into whether we can conduct the test or not.” While noting that the ministry is already testing elderly people and people with underlying illnesses on board, the network said it is also considering testing all passengers and crew members before they disembark “in order to dispel the anxiety and concern of the people of Japan.” According to NHK, Kato said the plan to keep all passengers and crew members on the ship for 14 days starting from Feb. 5 remains unchanged. He also reportedly hinted at the possibility of extending the quarantine period in the event that the ministry tests all the passengers and crew members for the virus, saying: “If we were to conduct the test before they disembark, then they would have to wait for the results before they get off the ship.”
