Mainichi and Sankei reported that a joint drill between the U.S. Marines and Nagasaki-based GSDF amphibious personnel was opened to the press yesterday in Okinawa, saying that this was the first time for the Japanese version of the Marines to participate in a field exercise in the island prefecture. The amphibious landing training was part of a month-long exercise that has been underway since Jan. 25. While noting that the GSDF is considering deploying a similar amphibious unit in the southernmost prefecture in the future with the goal of forestalling China’s maritime advancement in the East China Sea, Mainichi speculated that the local people are likely to oppose such a move.
