No. of takeoffs and landings of transient aircraft increases 2.5-fold at Futenma

The number of takeoffs and landings of transient aircraft (U.S. military aircraft which belong to other bases in and outside Japan) increased by about 2.5-fold from a year earlier at the U.S. Marine Corps’ Futenma Air Station in Ginowan, Okinawa Prefecture, in 2019, according to a survey conducted by the Okinawa Defense Bureau (ODB) of the Ministry of Defense (MOD). The finding highlighted a sharp increase on the burden on Okinawa.

 

According to the ODB survey, the number of takeoffs and landings of transient aircraft stood at 2,902 in 2019, a significant increase of 1,736 from the 1,166 recorded in 2018. (Abridged)
