In response to the spread of COVID-19, Defense Minister Taro Kono disclosed during a press conference on Feb. 14 that he directed the Maritime Self-Defense Force to examine building a “hospital ship.” The minister said, “There remain questions about how to secure budget and medical staff, but it (a hospital ship) would be useful for responding to a disaster as well.”
