The Monday edition of Okinawa Times led with a report saying that Okinawa Governor Tamaki released a statement concerning the FRF construction at Henoko. Monday marked the first anniversary of the prefecture-wide referendum, in which more than 70% of those who voted expressed opposition to the landfill work at Henoko for the construction of a “new U.S. military base.” Tamaki said in the statement that he remains determined to prevent a new base from being constructed at Henoko and will make utmost efforts to respond to the will of the Okinawan people who voted in the referendum. The paper noted that 52.48% of eligible voters cast ballots in the referendum and 71.7% of them, or 434,273 people, expressed opposition.
