On Feb. 21, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) held an experts’ meeting to revise the nation’s “basic plan on food, agriculture and farm villages” and presented a draft outline for the new basic plan, which will serve as the benchmark for the next 10 years. The nation’s food self-sufficiency rate has been on the decline in recent years. The outline calls for setting a new target for fiscal 2030 and introducing measures to ramp up Japan’s export of farm, forestry, and fisheries products as well as food. MAFF will discuss concrete numerical targets and other details, with an eye to having the plan receive cabinet approval in March.
