Asahi wrote that next week the Health Ministry is likely to put PCR coronavirus diagnostic test kits on a list of medical supplies covered by public health insurance, projecting that this will allow clinic doctors to administer such tests without first consulting local health centers as is currently required. The move comes amid rising public criticism about the unavailability of such tests for many people. According to the daily, although the cost for such tests is currently borne by the central government, patients will need to pay 10-30% of the cost depending on their income and other factors if the tests are covered by public health insurance.
